Beautiful Minds Series
2021
Mixed media series for 'Midnight Oil' exhibition
Beautiful minds aims to open a window into the qualities and capabilities of the neurodiverse mind by creating one original artwork as the starting point and a diverse array of its interpretations that consider the specific effects of neurodiversity on perception. Approximately %30 of adults are considered neurodiverse, and it is a big part of who I am. With this work, I hope to shift society’s negative view toward neurodiversity.
The works come to life in an interdisciplinary format using various media and styles to emulate the indefinite different perceptions of neurodiverse minds.
My use of different styles, materials, colors and textures activates the viewer's senses to give a taste of what neurodiversity feels like.
INSPIRE
Acrylic on Canvas 16”x20”
The abstract painting that started it all. The version that inspired them all.
HYPERFOCUS
Acrylic on Canvas 16”x20”
This painting focuses on only one small area of the original (lower right) which is what happens when neurodiverse people hyperfocus on the things that interest them
DeABSTRACT
Oil on Canvas 16”x20”
A photo-realistic oil painting that combines two ideas that were the most common survey results. These were a bike and water, so I made a vespa by the water and added a scarf and helmet to capture more elements from the original painting.
LITERALLY
Print 16”x20”
Printout of a descriptive text about the original piece to show the concrete and literal thinking mind of ASD. Just like some people see things literally rather than visually, Autistic individuals have a harder time understanding abstract concepts than concrete ones
SOUND OF ART
Mp3 from PIXELSYNTH
Synesthesia is a Neurodiverse condition where people can combine colors with sound. To show this phenomenon, I created a sound work for the painting using an online synesthesia generator to show how the painting might sound like for a synesthete. WARNING: sharp sounds
